Thornwood shot to the top of the table by virtue of being the only Premier league match of the weekend. Their 3-0 win over Beechwood Athletic sees them overtake Castlemilk Dynamo and The Vogue and have a 3 point cushion over their rivals. Thornwood face their sternest test so far next week as they tussle with The Vogue. Beechwood will be in cup action next week when they take on Gorbals United in MediaSpec League Cup.
First Division
With 4 sides having a bye into the second round of the GlassCo Cup, league business was on the agenda for four sides this week. Queen’s Park Spiders rocketed to the top of the league with a resounding 7-1 win over Wellshot. Wellshot were Spiders’ nearest challengers last year but there appears to be more of a gulf this year. They are involved in next weeks first round tie of the MediaSpec League cup when they challenge Cleddans. Spiders are now 3 clear of Treble 2 at the top of the first division and the two will square off next week in the League Cup. At the other end of the table, Springhall gained their first win of the season seeing off Polonia in the process who are now rooted to bottom of the league. Springhall will look to move further from the bottom of the table when they travel to Castlemilk East next week. Polonia on the other hand will need to wait another week to try and get their first win as they travel to play Division 2A leaders Southside Whitecart.
Division 2A
Gorbals United slumped to a second straight defeat, this time at the hands of Cumbernauld Colts Community. The 8-4 loss for Gorbals sees them sit in the second bottom spot for another week, as they will travel to Beechwood Athletic in the MediaSpec League Cup. Colts Community now sit in second place by virtue of playing more games, but are only one point behind last seasons tally. They are in the best position of their time in the SCAFL so far and will hope the momentum carries them through when they face off against Drumchapel Thistle in the cup next week.
Division 3
Overlee Partizans took the initiative of having a league game to make headway in the league campaign as they made it 3 straight wins against Crownpoint United. Partizans ran out 6-3 winners in the end and will travel to Stirling to face off against Beechwood Albion in next weeks cup tie list. United are still looking to find a level of consistency in the league but will fancy themselves for a cup run, starting against east end side, Glasgow Rovers.
GlassCo Cup
AC Volvomax are still looking for that elusive first win in the SCAFL, in both league and cup as they couldn’t win out in an all division 2B clash against Haldane United. Haldane ran out 5-1 winners and booked their slot in the next round of the cup. They will hope to emulate that next Sunday in another 2B clash, this time against Westend United. Volvomax have a bye in the League cup, and will take on Northend next week. Bellgrove got their first win as an SCAFL side, with a 4-2 triumph over FC Clydeside. Bellgrove now take on Maryhill Cosmos in the league cup, and will hope this win has kick started their season. Castlemilk East managed a cup shock by edging out MK Dynamo in a 2-1 nail biter. Dynamo are back t league duties next week as they host Manhattan Blacks, and they look to get back on track and off the bottom of the table. Cranhill United and Gartferry were involved in a shoot-out thriller following a 3-3 draw. In the end, it was Division 2A side Gartferry who won in sudden death penalties 6-5. Gartferry now travel to Redstar Thistle in next week’s first round of MediaSpec league cup ties, while Cranhill will travel to Rutherglen Vultures.
Castlemilk Dynamo will be looking at all competitions as potentially winnable and started their quest for GlassCo cup glory with a 9-0 hammering of 2B side Clyde City. City will face off against Baillieston next week in the league cup as they look to quickly bounce back from this loss, while Dynamo host impressive Division 3 side, Centaur United. Drumchapel Thistle progressed to the next round at the expense of Eastfield Athletic with a 4-2 win. Athletic host FC Clydeside in the League cup this week and will be looking to avoid three straight losses. Eastend Rovers hit a magnificent seven against Third Lanark with a 7-1 win to see them through to the second round. They face off against Glasgow Redstar next week, while Third Lanark take on Division 1 Milton. Kirkwood Thistle had a giant-slaying exercise as they put out Premier league Westburn with a 1-0 victory, and they now return to league duties when they take on Phoenix United next week. Manahttan Blacks hit double figures against 2B’s Beechwood Albion and sent them crashing out of the GlassCo cup with a 10-1 thumping. Albion nee some bouncebackability next time out against Overlee Partizans. Milton edged a 3-2 win against Westercommon Star as two of division 1’s early high flyers faced off. The win sets Milton off on another trophy surge as they hope to emulate their President’s Cup win from last season. Westercommon Star have the benefit of a free week next Sunday. Northend continue to impress since joining the SCAFL, this time with a 4-2 win over Cleddans, who had been performing well themselves in division 3. Cleddans take on another higher league opposition in next week’s MediaSpec cup tie as they face off against first division Wellshot. In the game labelled uniquely as the Bird Derby, it was Rutherglen Vultures who soared to a 4-0 victory over Lanarkshire Eagles. Vultures certainly weren’t scavenging in this game and face Cranhill next week, while Eagles will hope fly back to form when they take on Premier League Castlemilk United. Southside Whitecart perhaps recorded the most impressive result of their campaign so far, nicking a 2-1 win over fancied Premier League side Westhill. The 2A leaders now host Polonia Glasgow next week in the MediaSpec. Stanley felt the harsh end of the stick as they were hammered 9-1 by Premier League big boys Rutherglen Vogue. The Vogue now go back to league business as they take on fellow early pace setters, Thornwood. Stanley need to pick themselves back up as they face off against fellow 2A side Quayside in the MediaSpec League Cup first round.
Westend United took a pounding from Cumbernauld Colts in a hard going 9-0 loss for the Glasgow side. Whitehill heaped more misery on rock-bottom side Maryhill Cosmos, running out 4-3 winners and progressing to the next round in the process. Linthouse are th next challenge for Whitehill in theMediaSpec, while Maryhill host Bellgrove in the same competition. Linthouse also progressed to the second round today, when they handed out a 5-1 loss to Glasgow Rovers. Rovers will be reeling from this result and will look to revenge against another 3rd division side, Crownpoint in the MediaSpec League cup. Centaur United were held by Glasgow Redstar in a 3-3 nail-biter for both sides. United managed to salvage the tie, winning 5-3 in penalties, to go 2 for 2 against Redstar.
